HAPPY LABOR DAY!

In the town where I grew up, there was an annual fair at the end of
the Summer. So for me, photos of carnivals bring back memories
of enjoying my limited number of barefoot days,
barbecues, + boat rides! Have a great weekend
+ if you are from a locale with a brief Summer season,
soak it up while you can!!

Mix it up: Vintage Tableware

There is something so fresh and fun about mixing
vintage tableware in with your everyday
china + porcelain! Below I've listed a few websites that sell
only "vintage tableware".Another option is to discover your
own goodies at a yardsale ormaybe you desire a repro
that just looks old, but has nevergraced another table...
in any case..
Happy Hunting!

Architecture - August - Modern Marvel

Philip Johnson in front of his home, 1949.

I've decided to post a variety architectural gems on SHELTER monthly!

Philip Johnson's - Glass House
International Style
Built in: 1949

The Glass House is now open to the public and is situated on 47 acres in picturesque New Canaan, CT. Philip's designed this home for his own use; it is a study of proportion, materials, reflectivity + light. The openness of the space creates an intimate relationship between the inhabitant and the landscape. This home is not for the faint of heart, or the modest, the only interior walls surround the bathroom. The contrast of the "glass box" with the organic is quite beautiful.

Philips was clearly influenced by Mies van der Rohe.

I'm sure the r-value (insulation) of this home isn't great! For more information and photographs visit: http://www.philipjohnsonglasshouse.org/

Couldn't resist - Design Tip + Trick

La Dolce Vita posted this interior on her blog back in the Spring
of 2008. This designer's home was so beautifully designed,
I had to share it again.. For those of you who haven't seen her home,
it's pure eye candy!

That leads me to my design tip. One of the first elements
I discuss in my residential class is the importance
of COHESION.

Webster's Dictionary describes COHESION as: "Sticking together" :
that doesn't sound so glamorous but it's true.

The decorative + architectural elements throughout your
space/home/chalet etc. etc. should read as a whole, NOT
match perfectly because that is a BORE, but the pieces of
the puzzle should flow and relate in some shape or form.

This can be accomplished in a multitude of ways...
with color, contrast, texture, decorative materials such as the use of mirror,
repetition etc.
Lisa Epley (the designer employs most of those items + more).

This venetian mirror is fabulous!

I would love a charcoal and white kitchen!!

FLOWER POWER

I am currently working on a project where I used a graphic
flower as my design inspiration. An aspect of the design will
include these floral photographs, blown up to a very large scale.

Each image is so colorful and graphic, I love them! I may have to
order one for my living room. There are a number of images available on the
photographer's website and better yet, he'll take care of enlarging the print for you!

Summer Lovin' 2

Before the Summer is officially over, I thought I would share on more retreat.
This laid back vacation home belongs to interior designer Eric Hughes.. Fellow design/magazine addicts may remember seeing the vacation home he created for Sarah Jessica Parker + family. I'm sure I could find the photos some place in my archives if anyone is interested.

Enjoy!

Simple, but creative idea

I love straightforward, but ingenious ideas.
This is a great one to employ for your everyday coat, cardigan, hat, bag etc.
Many homes are short on storage, and don't even have room for a coat closet. What a simple fix. The pegs and backboard could be any number of finishes or colors.

Sneak Peek - Fall is just around the corner

I'm back from my much needed break on the South Shore!! I can't believe the Summer is almost over. I cherish this time of year!! If you are a North Easterner you'll know exactly what I am talking about. The winter drags on forever....blah blah blah. I'll stop rambling now.
Coming home to a slew of new Fall magazines and catalogs is always a treat. Here's a sample of Urban Outfitters home collection. They are looking good and the price is always right.

"New Item" tufted velvet headboard, avail. in a # of colors.
